Pennsylvania 2026

On the land currently known as the Allegheny National Forest, forever the ancestral homelands of the Seneca people of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Pennsylvania Annual Rainbow Gathering was held near the town of Tidioute.

Featured below are 116 beautiful audio field recordings - songs, stories, and snippets - made at various camps and locales. To assist your listening and scrolling pleasure, within each recording location, tracks are listed alphabetically by performer.

On July 1st, at Love Kitchen, a handful of individuals from the Seneca Nation came to the gathering to do an opening ceremony for the gathering. I was kindly given permission to record, save for the opening blessing addressed in Onöndowa'ga:' Gawë:nö' (Language of the People of the Great Hills), their native language. Blaine Tallchief, Head Faithkeeper of the Cold Spring Longhouse at Seneca Nation, led the welcoming ceremony. I uploaded the recording in full, which includes a song, stories, and a Q&A session. Truly wonderful listen!

Also, leading up to the gathering, friends planned to set up a collective singing camp, where songs were presented, focusing on group singing rather than a focus individual performance pieces. Many beautiful songs were shared and make up the bulk of the recordings I made at the gathering. This includes old & new Rainbow songs, spirituals, Rise Up Singing tradition, songs of resistance, Round & Zipper songs, rounds, peace, love, and harmony from various song communities and traditions. In these tracks, I list the song leader and song title, and when known, in parentheses I include the original song catcher.

Also included are recordings I made at Granola Funk Theatre on July 1st, Singer-Songwriter Night, and on the July 4th Variety Show, and a wee bit at Lovin’ Ovens, Second Breakfast, Main Circle (after all these years I finally recorded - albeit haphazardly given the nature of dinner circle - The Magic Hat Song!), and hanging out at the (fabulous) bridge at Piney Run.

Truly, after over a quarter century of recording at gatherings, this was one of my all-time favorite years, such joy, exuberance, and love underscored each recording and session.
