Leftovers III: The MiniDisc Years (2000-2009)
Welcome to the last of the leftovers from what I call the MiniDisc years 2000-2009. In this collection, you’ll find recordings from the US, Mexico, and Panama. Featured below are call & response chants, campfire singalongs, poetry, spoken word, folk ditties, birdsong, walking trail sounds, instrumentals (including a cover of Crazy Train no less!), comedy, stories, in addition to uncovered tunes from exquisite songwriters who have since passed (Raccoon and Guitar Mike), a Colombian family band (Pedalus), Panamanian Congo Dance music, Afro-Cuban drumming, Nahuatl poetry adapted into song, silly sounds + soundbites, and this, that, and the other thing. Undoubtedly, there’s something for all the varied tastes and moods that we all have. From the cheese-y to the sublime – it’s all there!
I updated to a different digital recorder following the 2009 New Mexico gathering. MiniDiscs and DATS were phasing out and digital recorders were the new thing. I used a DAT recorder as well on occasion, but anything significant has been archived. There have been a few more compilations of leftovers that were compiled and produced, and they are available on this site. For those, though, I already had transferred the tracks to my computer but they hadn’t made the cut for a CD due to time constraints, so I uploaded them with relative ease. This time, however, there were 120 MiniDiscs and over 150 hours worth of untransferred material. Hence, why they remained packed away in a box for a good decade. I had to listen and transfer all the usable files in real-time – it’s so much easier these days with SD cards! But, every now and then, the box of discs continued to glance over and tug on my shoulder. Finally, they won the staredown. I got on the job. Smart to do so considering that the recorder I have is over twenty years old and not sure if it was up for the arduous task anymore. Thankfully, it was in good working order, and I’ve managed to cull 299 tracks. Whew!
Anyway, thank you to everyone who contributed whether through performance or all the hard work required to even make it all happen. As the adage says: we can do more together than any of us can do on our own. Many of these recordings are from over 15 years ago, and being a Rainbow gathering, it is ethnographically challenging to get all the performers’ names and titles correct, so please contact me if you have a correction or update to make. I hope you enjoy the sounds – there are some gems to be sure.
May your dreams rise up to meet you.
May any harm always dissipate
May the moon raise ideas within you
And may love surround you and guide your way on
