This year’s collection of field recordings were recorded at the 2021 Pennsylvania Prism Rainbow Gathering in the beautiful Allegheny National Forest near the towns of Ridgway and Kane.
As the country crawled its way out of COVID, having a single annual gathering (yeah yeah, some consider 2021 New Mexico THE Annual- which is well and good, but semantics is beside the point - seemed too ambitious, too soon if you will, in regards to health and sanitation. “Build Strong Regional Family” was the meme encouraged by many gatherers, and in turn, the idea for “Prism” Gatherings (refraction rather than division) arose, and most occurred close to or during the traditional annual gathering dates of July 1-7th throughout the country.
I anticipated a smaller gathering in Pennsylvania. Most estimates suggest between 400-500 people attended. I was fortunate enough to record a stellar Variety Show at the Lovin Ovens Lite Bliss Pit, delightful trailside and campfire recordings at That Kitchen, Space Camp, and Bear Necessities, a few entertaining sessions inside the Story Glory tent, and various field ambience, including the first time I have ever recorded the July 4th Prayer for Peace.
I look forward to 22 years of field recording at rainbow gatherings next summer at the 50th Anniversary of the Annual Rainbow Gathering - the year of the Jubilee - in 2022 in Colorado. I continue to work on the book about my field recording escapades at rainbow and have decided to wait until after the aforementioned 50th before publishing.
